Biological Model
The cancer cell death is not as simple as calculating specific beam energy to a number of cancer cells destroyed. In-fact there are multiple cell death mechanisms after being treated with a course of radiotherapy over the entire course of the treatment. Treatment can take months to years and the specific dosage has to be calculated factoring in statistical models over this time.
These models assume a certain density of oncological cells within healthy cells, to improve the planning of treatment the breast tissue is further divided up into many segments with different density. In the future, hopefully a beam profile can be developed using this map and some form of optimization algorithm- the limiting factor over the hackathon was the complexity of biological models and computational power and skills required to implement geant4. Therefore a simple model of finding the best focus for beams was used.
